How can we help you?

We can advise you on the best time for capital expenditure to minimise your tax bill. We can also take care of all taxation matters for your employees.

Corporation tax

We'll make sure your business is fully compliant with all corporation tax requirements:

  • Preparing corporation tax returns
  • Submitting returns to HMRC
  • Fulfilling statutory accounts tagging requirements
  • Calculating corporation tax liabilities
  • Advising on payment dates of liabilities including tax payable by quarterly instalments

We'll also provide:

  • Planning to minimise corporation tax liabilities
  • Profit-extraction
Capital taxes planning

We work closely with our private client team to ensure that we help business owners plan appropriately to minimise inheritance tax exposures, accessing available reliefs and exemptions including business property relief (BPR).

Similarly, we support business owners in structuring for tax-efficient business disposals, including planning to access capital gains tax business asset disposal relief (BADR) on a business sale or management buyout, or the capital gains tax exemption on a qualifying sale of shares to an employee ownership trust.

Employment solutions

Larking Gowen has wide experience in employment taxes. We regularly advise clients of new developments by means of quarterly employer bulletins and ad hoc technical updates.

Key areas of focus include the implementation of share schemes and advising on tax-efficient employee benefits.

Reorganising your business

At Larking Gowen we can help in all matters of accounting, tax and finance, and offer advice, at each stage of the business life-cycle. The areas we can add value include:

  • Setting up in business (choice of business structure)
  • Buying a business (shares, trade and assets)
  • Reorganising your business
  • Forming a group structure
  • Merging or demerging
  • Tax planning for exiting your business
  • Handing over to a family member
  • Selling to a management buy-out
  • Selling to a third party
  • Ceasing to trade

Research and development claims (R&D)

If your company has carried out any R&D projects, you may qualify for significant tax relief. We can help you identify these, along with related qualifying expenditure to legitimately maximise your claim.

The UK’s R&D tax relief system is undergoing substantial change as the previous SME and large company schemes are merged into a single scheme from 1 April 2024, subject to new rules and requirements, alongside a more favourable relief for R&D intensive companies.

HMRC compliance activity has in this area has expanded significantly. We can help ensure your claims are robust and assist with HMRC enquires into submitted claims.

Patent box

If your company derives income from patents you may qualify for a corporation tax rate of 10% on profits derived from those patents. We can establish whether your company qualifies and help you make a claim, navigating the changes to the patent box regime for you.

Capital allowances - fixtures in buildings

Businesses can get tax relief on expenditure on fixtures in buildings, such as plumbing and electrical installations, through the capital allowance system.

It’s important to understand the full value of fixtures in a property when you are buying or selling and to understand the steps you need to take to secure the benefit of the tax relief or obtain value from it.

We can assess the position on investment in new buildings, whether new or second-hand.

We can review your capital expenditure over recent years and establish whether you can claim additional tax relief.

We can also advise on how to maximise and accelerate tax relief through the capital allowance system including accessing the annual investment allowance, or full expensing allowance as appropriate.

Creative and cultural sector reliefs

Larking Gowen acts for a number of clients in the creative and cultural sectors.

We can advise on the availability of the enhanced reliefs which include those available for the following organisations:

  • Theates
  • Museums and galleries
  • Orchestras

HMRC investigations can be lengthy and complicated. Our experience and knowledge can help you reach a favourable conclusion. As a firm, we offer a Tax Fee Protection Service which covers the cost of supporting you through an HMRC enquiry, giving you peace of mind. More details of this service can be found here.
